Grrrr… I spent ages writing this question then I accidentally clicked on the close page button and it all got deleted now I am having to write it again. Don’t ask me how I did it, I am not sure what possessed me, but I think it might have had something to do with lady gaga. well, the whole thing was kind of her fault, because she came on on shuffle on iTunes, so I closed iTunes and I must have clicked never mind it’s a long story lets just skip to the question.
Before I explain any further, I would like to make one thing clear. I am not emo. Anything but. By emo, I mean the stereotype, and I realise it is a type of music and not a way of life, but I don’t know how better to explain what I am about to explain to you. I guess if I had to fit into any stereotype, it would probably be… rock chick? Although, I am strongly against stereotypes.
I may sound like I am moaning, but please, bare with me.
The other day I had this swirly drawing of a sort of… Tim Burton style vines or thorns on my wrist. This new girl told me she loved it then asked me to do one on her wrist. I felt so happy! Someone actually liked one of my mid-maths-lesson doodles! Then my ‘best friend’ came into the room. The new girl told her how she was excited because I was going to draw my pattern on her wrist. My friend took one look at the thing on my wrist, and said "Ew, that’s well emo!". right in front of my face. I know how this must sound pathetic. I am 13, I can’t help being a grumpy tosser! And it was annoying.
Another time was in my R.E lesson the other day. I had a pen mark just where a fountain pen had splattered or something, going across my wrist. (this next bit will be predictable) and, believe it or not, she said to me "eww, you self harmer, your such an emo!". Yeah, you think she was just joking, but trust me, I know my friend. You can tell by her tone of voice whether she is joking or not. Then, that one little comment progressed into her and my other friend making a list. Yes, a bloody LIST of reasons why I am more emo than them. This list consisted of things like: wears darker clothes (my ‘best friend’ wears only black, so l don’t know where they got this from) wears darker makeup (this particular day I was wearing a little bit of black eyeliner with gold/bronze eyeshadow) the fact that I love Tim Burton movies (I mean, who doesn’t?!) The fact that I listen to emo music (may I say here, that my favourite music is old rock and metal, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, David Bowie, the Beatles, Led Zep, all that, and she listens to screamo.)
It is so annoying. I don’t go a day without hearing "omg, your such an emo!"
What can I do to shut her up?
p.s- to make this question more fun after I have bored you with my high school problems, in that big block of moaning I did above, I have hidden a not capital L where a capital i should be. Can you find it? Winner gets a free hug!
Here’s my advice. I’m a guy and I go through the same thing. I have these two pairs of black pants that I am constantly wearing and washing. They are the most comfortable pair of pants I have ever bought, but they’re starting to get a little short on me. I hate wearing my blue jeans. They just feel awkward on me. I also feel strange wearing any t-shirt that’s not black. I love all sorts of music, the kind that you like and the kind that your friend likes and some that neither of you have most-likely never heard of. I buy a lot of band t-shirts and movie t-shirts, and they’re all black. I end up with cuts on my wrists every once in a while that are no fault of mine, I don’t self-harm, but everyone thinks that I do. I come to the main office once a month because of some idiot. I’m bisexual, and it really doesn’t help my cause when almost every single person that I hang out with are people that would be considered to be in the "goth" crowd and call themselves bisexual when only a few of them are. There is a confusion between goth, emo, and punk and I’m used to it. A goth is someone who dresses in all black due to their obsession with death. An emo is someone who actually does harm themselves, but does not always dress in black. And a punk is someone who follows D.I.Y. ethics.
I hear emo, goth, freak, loser, vampire and all that other crap every single day. I don’t really mind it. I’m not trying to have some sort of image; I just like music, dark clothing, men and women, Tim Burton movies (which a lot of people at my school don’t like, strangely), and certain people who like the same things as me. Since that new girl seemed to like the Tim Burton-esque design you drew on yourself, she might like other things that you’re into. Maybe you should get to know her a little better and you and her could end up being really good friends.
