Including Women and Girls in Soccer: Challenging the ESFNA
Many of us have found one reason or another to complain about the annual soccer tournament, but few people will fight to make a difference. I have chosen to endorse the petition written by Mrs. Anisa Adem with the hopes that the Ethiopian Sports Federation of North America will sincerely consider the value of incorporating women athletes in the annual tournament.

UNBELIEVABLE:

Girls Team Denied Participation in Annual Soccer Tournament

An Ethiopian soccer federation refuses to allow girls to participate in its annual tournament.  An activist tries to put an all-female team together, but after much debate with the federation, this team still can't participate in the annual tournament.  Read on to learn more about this “unbelievable” case of discrimination against girls and women in sport.

A parent contacted the Foundation for advice in dealing with a soccer association that is discriminating against girls. According to this parent, the association has a tournament for men and boys only, and only after much pressure from this parent, did it agree to allow a girl’s team in the tournament. However, when the girls did compete, they were forced to play a boy’s team and in non-prime time slots or locations than the other teams. To read more about this situation and see how you can join in this parent’s struggle for equality, please visit their website.

Ethiopian Woman Using Soccer to Challenge Girls' Cultural Roles

PLANO - Anisa Adem's daughters asked a simple question with no easy answer. It hung in the air, searching for the place where culture, gender and religion meet. "Why can't girls play soccer here?" they asked. "Is it the Ethiopian culture or Muslim culture?"
